Empowering Young Azerbaijani Researchers in Seismology
The Solmaz Aghayeva Memorial Scholarship
The Solmaz Aghayeva Memorial Scholarship was established by her daughter, Sevinj Aghayeva, and her husband, Farman Aghayev, in memory of a devoted scientist, loving mother, and inspiring role model. Solmaz Aghayeva dedicated her life to the advancement of geology and mineralogy in Azerbaijan, and this scholarship is our way of keeping her spirit and values alive.
This scholarship is meant to support students who, like Solmaz, are driven by curiosity, determination, and a deep love for science. It’s not just about academic achievement—it’s about celebrating those who are passionate about making a real contribution to their field and their community.
Solmaz believed in the power of education, collaboration, and long-term thinking. Through this scholarship, we hope to help future scientists grow, thrive, and continue the kind of meaningful work she cared so deeply about.
Who Can Apply?
The Solmaz Aghayeva Memorial Scholarship is open to students and young researchers in the fields of geology and mineralogy who are passionate about science and eager to grow both academically and professionally.

-
Participation in scientific conferences (local or international)
-
Presentation of original research
-
Fieldwork, workshops, or short-term scientific programs
-
Opportunities to connect with the broader geoscience community
Whether you're a university student with a strong academic record or a young scientist preparing to share your work, this scholarship is here to help you take the next step.
We welcome applications from those who are:
-
Based in Azerbaijan
-
Actively engaged in geology or mineralogy
-
Motivated to deepen their knowledge and contribute to the scientific community
-
Looking for opportunities to participate, learn, and grow
To apply, please send your CV and a short motivational letter through our [Chat Settings] or contact page. Tell us about your studies, your goals, and how this scholarship would support your development.
💬 The budget for this year is 300 Euro. Depending on the quality and number of applications, the scholarship may be awarded to one individual or shared among several recipients.
🧭 The final decision will be made by a committee of researchers from the Institute of Geology.
🗓️ The scholarship is awarded annually on July 3rd, in honor of Solmaz Aghayeva’s birthday.
This is our way of continuing Solmaz Aghayeva’s path—supporting those who, like her, are committed to exploration, learning, and meaningful contribution.

Solmaz Aghayeva, PhD
Solmaz Tofiq qızı Aghayeva was a dedicated scientist in the fields of geology and mineralogy, born on July 3, 1956, in Baku. In 1978, she graduated with a degree in geological prospecting from the Azerbaijan Institute of Oil and Chemistry (now the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University).
She spent over 40 years working at the Geological Institute of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences—now known as the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of ANAS. In 1999, she defended her dissertation on "Elastic Stress Fields of Seismogenic Structures on the Southern Slope of the Greater Caucasus (Azerbaijan Territory)" and earned her PhD (Candidate of Sciences).
Throughout her career, Solmaz Aghayeva was involved in numerous scientific and technical projects, including collaborations with both national institutions and international organizations. Her research focused on understanding the causes of seismic activity in Azerbaijan—particularly the stress conditions in the Earth’s crust and how they relate to earthquake mechanisms and seismic zoning.
Since 2013, she also taught at Baku State University, sharing her knowledge with master’s students through courses like Marine Geophysical Research Methods, Theory of the Earth's Crust, and Seismic Zoning. Teaching was something she truly valued, and she took pride in helping shape the next generation of geologists and geophysicists.
Over the years, she published more than 40 scientific articles and contributed meaningfully to the development of seismology in Azerbaijan. Solmaz Aghayeva's dedication, curiosity, and commitment to both research and education have left a lasting mark.
We believe that supporting young Azerbaijani researchers in seismology is the best way to honor Solmaz Aghayeva's legacy and contribute to the future of seismic exploration.
